GUNNISON, Colo. -- The Colorado Division of Wildlife will hold a meeting to discuss issues regarding the Gunnison's prairie dog, 9 a.m.-noon, Nov. 3, at the multi-purpose room at the Gunnison County Fairgrounds.
This will be a working meeting of groups and individuals involved in conservation work for the prairie dog that is native to the Gunnison Basin, explained Nathan Seward, conservation biologist for the DOW in Gunnison. At the meeting, the DOW will meet with officials of other agencies and private landowners to talk about the action plan developed in 2009 to guide conservation of the small mammal. Participants will also review work done during the summer of 2010 and discuss future plans.
During the summer, DOW researchers searched the area for prairie dogs. Colonies were found throughout the Gunnison Basin on private and public land. The researchers also dusted some of the colonies with an insecticide to prevent outbreaks of plague.
A presentation of the research work will be given by Dan Tripp, the DOW's lead plague researcher.
Anyone interested can attend the meeting, however, it will not be a public hearing, Seward explained. Attendees can ask questions and participate in discussions, but public testimony will not be taken.
